What is WSIB? Why is workplace safety training important for your business? As an employer, it’s important to understand how the overall WSIB process works. It’s your job to equip your management team in the case of an unfortunate event that may or may not cause your company to become liable after a potential workplace accident.

WSIB

WSIB or WORKPLACE – SAFETY – INSURANCE – BOARD was founded by the province of Ontario over 108 years ago to protect our workplace community. The WSIB provides no-fault collective liability insurance and access to industry-specific health and safety information and is entirely funded by employers.

Some of the topics that WSIB governs are:

  • Workplace safety/reducing injury, disease and fatalities
  • Administering the insurance plan
  • Providing compensation and other benefits to injured workers and their survivors
  • Facilitating workers’ recovery, return to work and re-entry into the labour market

People who are injured or become ill because of work also have rights and responsibilities under WSIA. Provincially regulated workers in Ontario workplaces have the right to:

  • Know about potential danger.
  • Participate in making their workplace safe.
  • Refuse unsafe work.

Every year, the WSIB receives approximately 250,000 claims and pays over $2.5 billion in benefits. Coverage can include full medical care for people injured at work and wage replacement for as long as necessary until they are able to return to work. In the event of a fatality, the WSIB works with the surviving spouse to provide financial help, assistance in re-entering the workforce if necessary, and support to provide for the post-secondary education of dependent children.

Workplace Safety

As an employer, it’s important to understand how the overall WSIB process works. It’s your job to equip your management team in the case of an unfortunate event that may or may not cause your company to become liable after a potential workplace accident.

Nobody wants to expect the worst-case scenario, but in some industries, accidents may not be 100% avoidable. Your best chance of success starts with you, the business owner. Keep your team up to date on the best safety practices and protocols by investing in workplace injury management training. In order to be compliant with WSIB, your company should have both safety measures in place as well as a thorough gameplan for when/if an issue may arise.
