If an employee has an accident at work, do you know what immediate steps you need to take in order to remain compliant? If not, that’s okay, WIMT is here to guide you every step of the way.

Having WSIB-compliant practices in place is an important part of running a successful and safe business in Ontario. In fact, there are many responsibilities that employers may or may not be aware of.

That’s where our training company comes in! We make sure your team knows everything they need to in order to comply with WSIB laws and regulations, and more.

As you know, an accident can occur at any time, requiring immediate medical attention, and as a company, you are legally obligated to be prepared for any emergency situation that could arise. It is for this reason that many companies invest in proper WSIB training to iron out any potential kinks.

If an employee has an accident at work, do you know what immediate steps you need to take in order to remain compliant? If not, that’s okay, WIMT is here to guide you every step of the way.

1. Provide First Aid (If Required)

Employers are responsible for supplying adequate first aid supplies on site and also making sure these supplies are properly used in the event of an emergency. This should be the first priority on the day of the accident. On top of having access to these first-aid supplies, your supervisors and management team should also be trained in proper first-aid practices.

They should also know how properly fill out the accident form required should an incident occur on company property.

2. Investigate The Injury

In any work-related injury, it’s always important to have a detailed record of both the event, as well as the resolution record that specifies what first aid attempts were made to help your employee after a workplace accident.

The person tasked with investigating the injury should ask the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY, and HOW to fully understand what occurred and how to ultimately prevent that injury from occurring again.  Witnesses, if any, can be a vital resource during this process.

Investigating the injury will also allow the employer to understand if there are discrepancies and if the workplace injury should be challenged with the WSIB.

3. Arrange Transportation

As the employer is it your responsibility to ensure that transportation is provided to healthcare treatment should the injured person require treatment. This includes arranging and paying for transportation to a clinic or hospital depending on the severity of the injury.

4. Date Of Injury And Wages

For the date of injury, WSIB requires that the injured party is paid their full wages.  This is a requirement under the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act.
